How the Egg Brushing Science Experiment Teaches Dental Health

December 26, 2025 9:00 am

At Happy Campers Pediatric Dentistry in Albuquerque, we love showing kids that learning about dental health can be hands-on and fun. One of our favorite ways to spark curiosity is through the Egg Brushing Science Experiment — a simple but powerful activity that teaches children how brushing affects their teeth using a common kitchen staple: eggs!

Eggshells are made of calcium carbonate, which is similar in structure to tooth enamel. That makes them the perfect stand-in for teeth when demonstrating how different drinks and brushing habits can affect our smiles.

What You’ll Need

  • Hard-boiled white eggs (4–6)
  • Clear plastic cups or jars
  • A variety of liquids (soda, juice, coffee, water)
  • Toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
  • Timer or clock

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the eggs: Hard boil your eggs and let them cool.
  2. Label the jars: Pour a different liquid into each cup or jar and label them accordingly (e.g., soda, juice, water).
  3. Soak the eggs: Carefully place one egg into each jar. Let them soak overnight.
  4. Observe the changes: The next day, remove the eggs and observe the effects. Has the shell stained? Is it softer?
  5. Brush and compare: Using a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, brush one half of each stained egg. Let your child see the difference between brushed and unbrushed surfaces.

What Kids Learn from the Egg Brushing Experiment

This activity gives children a visual and tactile way to understand the importance of brushing twice a day — especially after consuming sugary or acidic drinks to prevent cavities. It also helps them grasp why water is the best choice for their teeth.

Why We Love It at Happy Campers Pediatric Dentistry

Dr. Jung Lee Nouri (Dr. Lee) and our team enjoy activities like the Egg Brushing Science Experiment because they encourage lifelong learning and healthy habits. It’s an excellent conversation starter for parents and a memorable experience for kids.

If your child enjoys this science activity, let us know at your next routine visit! We’re always happy to provide more ideas for learning about oral health in fun and meaningful ways.
