Pediatric Sedation Dentistry in Albuquerque, NM
Some kids hop into the dental chair without a second thought. Others feel nervous, have a hard time sitting still, or have a complex treatment plan that involves several dental services. For these children, sedation dentistry can make care calmer, safer, and more comfortable for everyone involved.
At Happy Campers Pediatric Dentistry, we offer three types of dental sedation so we can match the right approach to your child’s age, health, and needs. Before any sedated visit, our team always reviews your child’s medical history and can explain each step and answer your questions so you feel confident in the plan. Contact us today!

Our Sedation Options
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide is the mildest form of sedation we offer. Your child breathes a blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small, comfortable nose mask. Within minutes, they feel relaxed and at ease while staying awake and able to respond. The effects wear off quickly once the mask is removed, making it a great choice for mild anxiety or routine procedures.
Oral Conscious Sedation
For children with moderate anxiety or longer appointments, oral conscious sedation offers a deeper level of relaxation. Your child takes a prescribed medication at our office before treatment begins. They remain conscious but feel drowsy and calm, and many remember very little of the visit afterward. Our team monitors your child’s vital signs throughout the appointment.
General Anesthesia
General anesthesia allows your child to be completely asleep during treatment. It is often recommended for very young children, kids with special healthcare needs, those with severe dental anxiety, or cases that require extensive work. A qualified anesthesia provider administers and monitors the anesthesia, so we can complete all needed treatment safely in a single visit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the side effects of dental sedation?
Most side effects are mild and short-lived. With nitrous oxide, some children feel slightly lightheaded or experience brief nausea. Oral sedation and general anesthesia can cause drowsiness, grogginess, or nausea for several hours post-treatment. After general anesthesia, a mild sore throat is also common. We’ll give you clear aftercare instructions and are always available if you have concerns after your child’s visit.
When can my child return to school after sedation?
It depends on the type of sedation. Children who receive nitrous oxide can usually return to school or normal activities the same day. After oral conscious sedation or general anesthesia, plan for your child to rest at home under adult supervision for the remainder of the day. Most kids are ready to return to school the next day, but this also depends on the dental treatment they are receiving.
Which dental treatments can be done with sedation?
When a child needs several services, sedation often allows us to complete them in fewer visits. Sedation can be paired with virtually any dental treatment, including:
- Cleanings and exams
- Tooth-colored fillings
- Dental crowns
- Pulp therapy (baby tooth root canals)
- Tooth extractions
